Vancouver police have arrested five kidnapping suspects after a dramatic morning rescue of a teenaged hostage.

The 18-year-old student from China was uninjured as strike force members pulled over a vehicle in which he was riding at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday in Burnaby.

Deputy chief Doug LePard said the young man was targeted when he was snatched from his West End residence Sunday. The kidnappers called the teen’s parents in China.

...

Police threw massive resources at solving the case, including wiretaps, surveillance and talking to officials in China. ... “Vancouver police worked closely with several levels of government in this investigation,” Le Pard said. ... LePard said police here received assistance from the RCMP and Chinese authorities.

...

He said the kidnappers had asked for a large ransom which the family in China would have struggled to pay.

The lead officer on the probe was Insp. Les Yeo, who also led the successful 2006 rescue of kidnap victim Graham McMynn.
