WINNENDEN, Germany - A 17-year old gunman went on a shooting spree at his former school in southwest Germany on Wednesday, killing at least 16 people before dying himself in a shootout with police, authorities said.
The former student, dressed in black combat gear, entered the school in Winnenden, a town of 27,000 near Stuttgart, at 9.30 a.m. and began firing.
He killed 10 students and three teachers at the school, as well as one person at a nearby clinic, before fleeing with a hostage in a car. He was killed in a shootout with police.
Two additional passers-by were killed and two policemen seriously injured in the shootout.

Michael McLendon, 27, left a trail of dead and wounded across two rural counties and three towns during Tuesday's shooting spree before killing himself after being cornered by police in a factory where he had worked.
Authorities said they were still trying to unravel the drama and McLendon's motives, but the carnage apparently began in the small town of Kinston, where McLendon set fire to his mother's house, leaving her dead.
McLendon then drove to the nearby town of Samson, where he shot his grandparents, an aunt and an uncle as they sat on the porch of their home, Samson mayor Clay King said.
He then killed the wife and baby daughter of local sheriff's deputy, Josh Myers, who lived across the street, gunned down as they were out on their front porch talking with neighbors.
Just minutes later Myers took part in the shootout with the killer, not knowing his wife, 31, and 18-month-old daughter had been slain.

March 1996 - BRITAIN - A gunman bursts into a primary school in Dunblane in Scotland and shoots dead 16 children and their teacher before killing himself.
March 1997 - YEMEN - A man with an assault rifle attacks hundreds of pupils at two schools in Sanaa, killing six children and two others. He is sentenced to death the next day.
March 1998 - USA - At Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Arkansas, two boys aged 13 and 11 set off the fire alarm and kill four students and a teacher as they leave the school.
May 1998 - USA - In Springfield, Oregon, a student opens fire in Thurston High School, killing two students and injuring 22. The boy's parents are later found slain in their home.
